Before being purchased by Duquesne Brewery Company in 1961, the clock was on the Hillside of Mount Washington and it displayed advertisements for various beverages. Franklin built it in Georgia and then shipped it to Pittsburgh. ![]() John Franklin designed the clock, and it is powered by a 1.25 horsepower Janett motor. The watch has a face with a diameter of 18 meters (60 feet) with a 7.6-meter (25 feet) hour hand and a 10.6-meter (35 feet) minute hand. The clock’s face has been used to advertise various brands over the years, including Coca-Cola. Located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the Duquesne Brewery Clock was the world’s biggest single-faced clock when it was built in 1933. About 25% of the clock’s area has a reinforced concrete slab where its machinery is fitted. As a floral clock, it is made up of plants and soil and has a diameter of about 24.25 meters (79.72 feet) with each of its hands weighing 1,763 pounds. The clock exceeds the next-biggest garden clock, in Switzerland, by about 2.2 meters (7.2 feet). Surat, India’s floral clock is the largest botanical clock and the third-largest clock face in the world. The mall had the largest leasable area in Europe from 2005 to 2011 and it is one of the largest malls in the world. Constructed in 2005, the digits of the clock are about 3 meters high (10 feet). The clock has a diameter of 32 meters (105 feet) and it was designed to beat the record set by the Floral clock in Tehran, Iran. Each penny causes Big Ben to gain 0.4 second per day.The second-largest clock in the world is on the large glass roof of the Istanbul Cevahir Mall in Şişli district, Istanbul, Turkey. The pendulum is adjusted by adding pennies made before the decimalization of the United Kingdom’s currency in 1971 to the weight. Big Ben is accurate to within two seconds per week. Big Ben is wound three times a week, and the winding takes over an hour. The double three-legged gravity escapement designed by Denison for Big Ben achieves the second of these but not the first. An ideal escapement would transmit the impulse without interfering with the free swing, and the impulse should be as uniform as possible. In a pendulum clock an escape wheel is allowed to rotate through the pitch of one tooth for each double swing of the pendulum and to transmit an impulse to the pendulum to keep it swinging. Denison’s principal contribution was a novel gravity escapement that imparted unprecedented accuracy to the clock. The clock was designed by Edmund Beckett Denison (later Sir Edmund Beckett and Lord Grimthorpe) in association with Sir George Airy (then astronomer royal) and the clockmaker Edward Dent.
